18-month Check-up (18月体检)

Posted by Michelle on July 31st, 2009

Yesterday we took Alex to see Dr. Grayson for his 18 months checkup. Alex didn’t sleep well the night before and was very tired. But he still managed to conduct very good behavior at the clinic. Dr. Grayson said Alex grows very beautifully. We are very pleased to know it.

As the part of the routine, Jennifer, the nurse, gave Alex two vaccine shots. He didn’t like it and cried of course. I tried to comfort him and said:”Oh, Jennifer is so nice and gentle.” Alex said back to me loudly without any hesitance:”NO!” I bet Jennifer heard it:(

Big Bear Vacation (大熊湖度假)

Posted by Michelle on July 16th, 2009

For the 4th of July weekend, we rented a cabin and stayed two nights at Big Bear. Everybody had a ton of fun even though we didn’t go skiing or boating or fishing. We are looking forward to doing all those activities when Alex is older.

We cooked in the cabins on the day we arrived. Olivia got some car sickness. Both kids seemed too excited to keep up with their routines. Putting them to bed became challenging.

We packed so much fruit and other stuff for Alex, but forgot Alex’s jacket. It is cold as hell in the morning at Big Bear. Some people in Big Bear were even wearing thick winter jackets. Olivia was very kind to lend Alex her jacket. I think Alex was pretty cute in Olivia’s sweater which was bought in China. With the warm sweater, Alex was able to play outside on his favorite bridge in the front of the cabin.

We had a nice breakfast in a restaurant randomly picked the next morning. The pancakes were exceptional. Alex kept pointing to the flags hanging outside and saying “flaaa”. He ate all the fruit we prepared for him that morning. We also discovered that Olivia likes Goldfish crackers.

How can we miss the water when we go to a lake? We visited a little park by the lakeside on July 4th. However, Alex was not used to walking in the water, and even though he had his beach sandals on he was still very uncertain about being in the lake. “Mama, help!”

There were beautiful fireworks in Big Bear that night. Unfortunately, the two kids were asleep and missed them. The next day, they paid tribute to the heroes of Independence Day in their own way. Look at these two serious little soldiers.

One of the lessons we learned this trip is that there’s no need to bring any fruit to Big Bear. I shopped at Stater Brothers there and found the watermelon is even cheaper than what I got from Vons in San Diego. Alex helped pick the syrup and butter for the next day’s pancakes, and had fun on the conveyor belt at checkout.

On our last night in Big Bear we found a Chinese restaurant next to the small airport. I highly recommend any restaurant like this (or like Casa Machado next to Montgomery Field if you are in San Diego) if you have kids. They can watch planes taking off and landing while dining. Alex was very tired before the meal, so we were surprised that he behaved so well at the table. Olivia had fun as well especially when she was feeding Alex the Cheerios.

We were supposed to go on a cruise with our family in August, but we were rejected by the cruise company because I will be in my third trimester by then. We love to go on vacation and will figure out something else to do. If you have some good vacation ideas, let us know. We can go together!

Business Man (小生意人)

Posted by Michelle on July 14th, 2009

One day we went out shopping and Alex carried his milk bag walking around in the store. The store owner teased Alex: “What a business man! I like your briefcase.” From then on, the milk bag becomes Alex’s briefcase and he likes to carry it whenever he can.

The video caught him with his briefcase at his bad mood. We just came back from outside, very hot. Alex was not very happy that he still had to carry his bag even inside the house.

“Mommy, didn’t you see I am tired after I got a big contract signed?”

First Harvest (一分辛苦,一分收获)

Posted by Michelle on July 14th, 2009

Alex has been working hard on the first task he was assigned, taking care of strawberries we planted in our yard. We bought three strawberry plants during our trip to Carlsbad U-Pick strawberry farm two months ago. One of them died, but it is not Alex’s fault. Alex still waters the dead one every day hoping to save it. I believe in miracles, so does Alex. Who knows?

When the summer finally came, Alex’s strawberries really grew and blossomed vigorously. Look, he is waving to you to see his first strawberry.

Last weekend, Alex cannot wait to taste the first strawberry he harvested. It was a little bit sour, but Alex seemed not to mind it at all. He ate up the one he picked following this picture in no time.
