Into the Wild

Posted by Dave on March 19th, 2009

well, into the Wild Animal Park, anyway.

Alex went to the farm on Sunday to hang out with Grandma and Grandpa while mom and dad went shopping and did some chores. After his morning nap they all went to the Wild Animal Park.

It was Alex’s first visit to the Wild Animal Park!

Seeing wild animals can make a young man thirsty.

“Whoa, did you see that, Grandma?”

Alex has gotten very good at taking the cap off his bottle and putting it back on. You can see him doing that in this picture.

Alex had a great time at the park and can’t wait to go back. Luckily, Grandma and Grandpa have passes, so they can get in anytime the park is open. I think he’ll be seeing a lot of this place in the future.

It was a nice warm day, so after they got back from the park, Alex decided to do a little relaxing on the patio with Grandpa.

Here’s Alex Sunday afternoon, thinking about eating some plastic grapes. He loves grapes.

Speaking of wild, look at that hair! Someone needs a haircut.

Luckily, Karen came by to cut hair on Sunday evening, and she brought her kid-sized smock.

Alex was very brave during his first haircut. He barely fussed, though he was getting pretty suspicious towards the end of the process.

The haircut went great! Our next pictures will show Alex having reformed from his youthful hippy days and gone corporate.

Sunny Days are Coming

Posted by Dave on March 10th, 2009

It’s been nice and sunny here in San Diego, and last weekend it was quite warm. The whole family spent some time hanging out in the yard.

Alex’s sunglasses fit him better now that he’s gotten a little bigger.

alex 001

I think he’s probably going to be one of those sun bunnies who always want to be outside, just like his mom. Be sure to wear sunscreen, son.

He’s much better at taking his sunglasses off than putting them on. He’s like that with his birthday Legos too–he can pull bricks apart with the best of them but he’s not much on putting them back together. In fact, he has pretty much the same relationship with Duplo that Uncle Jeff has with consumer electronics.

The plastic flatware from grandma’s toy picnic set is tastier and more fun to play with than sunglasses, in the final analysis.

Tonight, Michelle was goofing around with the camera while I had Alex on my shoulders.

He’s big and strong enough to hold himself erect, and it’s getting more and more fun to do stuff like this with him.

Little Alarm Clock (小闹钟)

Posted by Michelle on March 10th, 2009

Does anybody use alarm clock to wake up in the morning? If you do, I want to send our Alex to your home and he will wake you up pretty on time between 4AM and 430AM every morning!

After we came back from China, we kept Alex in our bed for two weeks because he totally forgot our house and his crib. He freaked out and could cry for 4 straight hours at the first couple of nights we tried to leave him in the crib. So we decided to take steps to bring him back on the track. Of course, Dave and I don’t like how Alex kept kicking us at night. He might be dreaming of playing soccer or something.

One week ago we started step two–send Alex back to his crib. I have to admit I was afraid Alex would cry and scream during the transition. Alex always sleeps on his back and looks pretty relaxed when he is in our bed. In his own crib, he sleeps on his tummy and buries his head into the pillow most of time. I don’t know if that is a sign that he doesn’t feel safe.

The first two nights of transition turned out to be unbelievably smooth. Advised by Michelle, my good friend at Flex, we started to read Alex stories at the bed time. It really works! Now even at daytime nap, Alex falls asleep much faster if we rock him and read him books.

Dave has become an expert putting Alex to bed at night. My mom keeps saying it is not good to let children sleep by themselves, let alone cry for hours. (It is true that in China parents don’t do that.) So my immunity to Alex’s cry becomes weaker and weaker. I feel so guilty. Fortunately, I have Dave. Now every night, after Alex and Mommy take a shower together, Daddy will take Alex, dress him, feed him, read to him, and put him in the crib and say Good Night. Mommy behaves like a coward checking the monitor downstairs.

As a reward, Alex started to call “BaBa” or “Daddy” every evening he hears daddy’s car coming or see daddy step into the house. How sweet is that!

Before I finish this post, let’s quickly take a look at Alex’s new skills.

1. He can sign “eat”, “doggie” or ‘”gougou” (doggie in Chinese)
2. He can walk up to three steps. The most important thing is he knows he can walk!
3. He got some red bumps on his left leg. Checked with Doctor, they think that is an unknown allergy reaction. Those bumps seem not to bother him.
4. He weighted 25 pounds with clothes
5. He is fascinated by trash cans and the lawnmower, and will point them say “WuWu”
6. He accepted goat milk, but still thinks the sippy cup is just for water, not milk.
7. He thinks it is fun to bend down to bite his toes
8. No.9 and No.10 teeth are coming down
9. He likes to cover his face to play peek-a-boo. He plays it with every teacher at daycare. Very cute. The teachers call him the ladies man.
10. He can push Mommy in the John Deere
