Happy Birthday (生日快乐)

Posted by Michelle on November 25th, 2008

I want to use this opportunity to say Happy Birthday to Emma, Kyla, Olivia, Alex, uncle Jack, and myself. Emma, Kyla, uncle Jack, and I were all born on November. Today, Olivia and Alex are both 10 months old, and Kyla is just one day young.

Last Saturday, Alex paid a visit to his cousin, Emma. He picked up the flowers and balloon. Alex, we want you to remember how lucky we are living on the earth, love and beloved by our dear families and friends.. Don’t take any day for granted. Be happy and be healthy.

alex 001

“Emma, I love you.”

We enjoyed shopping at Trader Joes so much that we didn’t realize we lost Alex’s stroller until we walked out the store and were ready to walk to our car. A old lady in the store said to me that Alex reminds her grandson, another gorgeous baby.

Grandma and Grandpa prepared a wonderful dinner for mum’s birthday. Alex looked so cute in Beaver’s clothes. It seems he is ready to work at workshop with Grandpa.

“Grandpa, more work?”

I do all my own stunts (新衣服)

Posted by Dave on November 20th, 2008

The shirt’s kind of hard to read in these pictures, but it says “I do all my own stunts”. Here’s a better picture of it. Thanks, Auntie Alba and Uncle Brian!

Alex is pulling up immediately when we put him down near something. He’ll be walking in no time.

First baby food I made for Alex

Posted by Michelle on November 16th, 2008

I wrote it down last week on our white board in kitchen to remind me to make something for Alex, finally, today I did it! I made chicken soup this morning when Alex was sleeping and Dave went to play racquetball. Then I used the chicken soup to cook rice. At night, I put vegetables, rice, and a very small piece of chicken in the blender to chop them finely. So Alex ate the first home made baby food today. YEAH!

Alex likes banana, oatmeal, especially plain yogurt, the kind has much less sugar. I fed him sweet potatoes last two days, but he didn’t like it as much as yogurt. Apparently, his appetite for bottles decreases. This morning he only accepted oatmeal, sweet potato, and banana as his breakfast.

Alex has mastered to stand up in the crib by himself. My prediction is he will talk around Christmas time. His 3rd tooth is coming down and bother him a lot. I happened to find from Dave’s baby book that Alex is taking the same teething sequence as his daddy.

Tomorrow is birthday of Emma, Alex’s cousin . And we will take Alex to see her. Alex always smiles to Emma’s pictures - I have used this technique to stop him crying successfully. How much I wish Emma and Alex would hold hands and play together. Happy Birthday, dear Emma. See you tomorrow.

9-month check-up result (late report)(九个月例行检查)

Posted by Michelle on November 11th, 2008

We did the 9-month follow up check up before we went to for cruise. Alex’s weight drops from 90% to 50%. My mom still asks me every week if I feed Alex egg yolk, which is very traditional baby food in China for body development. I tried, but Alex doesn’t like it. Dr. Grayson said we can feed anything soft to Alex now. On the cruise, every morning I fed Alex plain yogurt, which has less sugar, and oatmeal. Alex liked them. But I am puzzled by “not cow milk yet, but yogurt” instruction from doctors. Isn’t yogurt made from milk?

I had been worried if Alex would never crawl before he walks. He was super cute when he creep like a wounded solider, but I love to see the real crawl. On the cruise, I remember it was the last night on the boat, when we put Alex on the floor to take pictures, he suddenly crawled to us. A real crawl! I believe my parents want to see this very badly. I should have done more video conference with my parents.

Here comes the 9-month checkup report.

1. Weight:21 lbs 12 oz — 50% (体重:21磅12盎司)
2. Height: 29 inches — 75% (身高: 29英寸)
3: Head: 18.75 inches –95% (头围: 18.75英寸)
Have you noticed we have a big head baby? Dave said today when he dropped Alex at SEA, Alex cried when Dave left. I miss him very much and already cannot wait to pick him up at 5.  6 hours left.

Alex’s First Halloween(易峰的第一个万圣节)

Posted by Dave on November 2nd, 2008

We got back from the cruise Friday morning and dropped Alex off at daycare so we could get ready for Halloween. We had a bunch of cleaning to do, jack o’ lanterns to carve, and dinner to make before we had friends and Alex’s grandpa over for a Halloween party.

alex 121

Grandma got Alex a very cute pea costume for Halloween. Unfortunately by the time October 31 rolled around Alex was already too big for it! We got him mostly into it for a photo op, but the costume was also pretty heavy and hot and with the hot weather we’ve been having around here Alex got overheated pretty quickly, so it didn’t stay on long.

alex 123

No matter how hot you are, a little Curious George kiss always makes things better.

alex 130

Here’s Michelle’s jack o’ lantern–it’s Alex! Can you recognize him? I especially like the butt.

Alex had a lot of fun with everyone on Halloween. He liked looking at the trick-or-treaters. I tried to teach him how to give out candy to them but he ended up being fascinated by the shiny wrappers and keeping it for himself. Luckily, candy with the wrapper still on doesn’t taste good, so he didn’t ruin his dinner.

Alex stayed up late on Halloween with his guests and his candies but he eventually went to sleep. Here he is the next day, hanging out on the pumpkin Michelle carved.

Cruise to Cabo (第一次坐游船旅游)

Posted by Dave on November 1st, 2008

The family unit went on a cruise to Cabo San Lucas last week. None of us had ever been on a cruise before. I’d personally heard lots of negative things about cruises for about the first thirty years of my life and had this vision of wall-to-wall people, long lines for carb-loaded cheap food, and shuffleboard on the lido deck with a bunch of midwesterners. But the last couple of years, almost everyone that’s told us they went on a cruise said they had a great experience, so we decided to give it a try.

alex 007

Here are mommy and Alex on the gangway to the boat.

Getting on the boat was a pain. There were two giant cruise ships at the terminal, and they’d both arrived late, so there were really long slow-moving lines of traffic on Harbor Drive and of people at the terminal itself. We probably blew two hours in the heat just getting our bags checked and our identification processed, and they had a hell of a time figuring out how to handle Michelle’s visa on top of that. Poor Alex was in a fuzzy sleep suit and he was really hot. He did a great job being patient while we got everything taken care of.

alex 017

Alex didn’t end up doing any swimming–the water was a little cold for him–but he hung out by the pool and looked cool a lot. Here he is, just kicking it. He’s holding a cold drink in the hand you can’t see.

alex 065

We only had eight hours at Cabo, and we waited a bit to catch the tender into shore. We hit the beach at about noon, and it was really hot–made the San Diego terminal heat seem like a pleasant day. I heard someone say it was 92 or so, and there wasn’t much of a cooling breeze. Here’s the family unit unfortunately shaded on the marina.

alex 071

There’s this outfit in the marina that will let you swim in a tank with their trained dolphins. We didn’t actually do it–if I remember correctly the price was totally ridiculous–but their lobby/gift shop/observation area was mercifully air conditioned, so we stopped in. Here are Michelle and Alex by a non-dolphin-holding body of water in the gift shop.

alex 074

Cabo Dolphins did have top-quality themed merchandise! Alex was a real fan of this hat. We were thisclose to getting it for him, but it was a little large for him. He’s outgrown so many hats in his short life that he was very enthusiastic about the sizing on this one, as you can see.

alex 077

Here are Michelle and Alex back at the marina. I was surprised to see how small Cabo was–there really wasn’t much going on inland after you got past the buildings immediately around the water. You can sort of make out the extent of Cabo in the background of this picture, and doing so will keep you from noticing that Alex has apparently passed out from the heat.

We only stayed in Cabo for about an hour before we had to head back to the boat. Alex sweats like his dad. We were both drenched.

alex 089

After all the boarding and unboarding on the Cabo run it was time for some napping. We got Alex a Curious George stuffed monkey from Kohl’s a couple of weeks ago and he’s best buds with George now. They take naps together a lot.

Alex really slept well on the cruise, especially with it being a strange environment and all. He did better and better as the cruise went on. I think he liked the gentle rolling of the ship like I did.

alex 103

“You got a cute comment for this picture, Pops? Go ahead and make one. I dare you. My lungs are Godlike. I will shriek like there’s no tomorrow. You don’t want a piece of me. Think it over.”

alex 104

Michelle took a towel folding class on Thursday, where they taught cruisers how to roll towels into several cute animal shapes. Alex and I missed most of the class as we were walking around the atrium because he was a little resistant to sitting quietly just then, so here Alex is trying to use his mind reading skills to get the towel rolling patterns from Mom.

alex 110

Thursday night was Halloween on the ship–we celebrated it a day early because we were landing Friday morning. The crew did a pretty amazing job putting up a bunch of Halloween-themed displays and scheduling special events. I really wanted to catch the midnight screening of Ghostbusters in the lounge, but oddly enough having a baby in tow really eats into one’s nightlife availability.

Here are Alex and Michelle in front of a very scary Halloween display.

alex 115

Here are Alex and Dad in front of the casino, which had been taken over by a frightful inflatable skeleton driving a carriage. As you can see, part of my hair has already been scared straight up.

We landed Friday and got off the boat much more quickly than we got on, and that was that. Michelle had heard rumors about people gaining 27 pounds on a cruise, but even though we both ate way too much we only gained a pound each, which was nice. Overall, it was something we’d definitely like to try again.
